Symmetry
You learn - or confirm - a lot about yourself just by doing everyday things, don't you? I thought I'd kickstart myself by making some red and white blocks to send to France. I don't have much red fabric, nor do I have ANY white, except for this piece of plain white. I cut 1 strip of each fabric, and thought "I'll make the block with this, and if there isn't enough I'll make do". This is the end result.
I couldn't do it. I put it aside and carried on with another block, but kept looking at it, thinking "there are no quilt police. I can make a block like this if I want to. There are no rules". But I couldn't cope. I thought about it while I kept on sewing. I felt bad that my crochet rug was not symmetrical, but those who commented said they liked asymmetry. Or did the asymetrical people comment, and the symmetrical people silently agree? I'm ok with the rug, but I still look at it and notice. I do have obsessive compulsive tendencies, but I thought the medication was working well - obviously not well enough LOL!
I had to re-do the block. This is the most 'comfortable' I could make it using the least amount of extra fabric. Perhaps this is why I am not an art quilter, too uncomfortable.

I really like the process you went through-I don't allow myself to struggle with the process often enough - I think they are all very cool and I can see a whole quilt done with that first block - the final block is wonderful - thanks for sharing the struggle - I am not an art quilter either - Juliann
ReplyDeleteOne thing I find I have trouble with is that I rely too much on patterns, and get myself messed up when I can't follow them to the letter. So I think it is great that you have been experimenting. They all look great.
ReplyDeleteLove those red and white blocks!! I struggle with my own need to be symmetrical, too. I do really love other people's asymmetry, though!
ReplyDeleteYour blocks look just fine - there is nothing wrong with being creative! I can certainly relate - I'm not an arty quilter either and I am uncomfortable with assymetry.
ReplyDeleteI think they all look great - red and white is such a strong colour combo.
ReplyDeleteTHat's the great thing about quilting - there is no right and wrong.
:)
I'm wondering why those blocks look 'odd' and truly believe because we read left to right. I've fallen into that 'trick' by accident. Try it, and see if rearranging the appearance from left to right doesn't make it FEEL better. Or, use a mirror to view it beforehand. Can't hurt! The handkerchief block is great!
