It's a Sad Day

Just a quick post to share my sadness about having ordered my first pair of reading glasses. In fact my first pair of glasses ever. He was a nice young fellow, and was quite sensitive when referring to my year of birth (1964), and the deterioration of the eyes with age....

The good news is I have 20/20 vision, so no problems with long distance (which I knew), but I do need reading glasses. So I took the plunge, paid my deposit, and spent half the trip home thinking "how did it come to this???", and the other half thinking "imagine the fabric I could buy with the $300+ that I am about to spend on glasses".

I blame it on the hexagons. Whose idea was that??

Off to bed now after a quite pleasant Friday night shift in Emergency (for a change). Thanks for the kind commiserations, but not for all those who have been snickering at my misfortune. I think they would be the people that already 'have' glasses....

  1. Oh I can relate to this misfortune. I was so smug that I could still read the phone book without glasses, unlike most of our friends. Sadly I too fell from grace and now can't read or sew without my glasses.Welcome the the club LOL

  2. It happens to the best of us. I also had perfect vision until I hit the big 40 and then it was reading glasses. I can't get used to bifocals so I have the reading glasses on a chain around my neck. I know it looks dorky but at least I can find them there.

  3. You are so lucky, I have been wearing glass since I was 6 years old. 5 years ago I got my first set of bifocals. My sister is my eye technician and she says if my eyes get any worse, I will need coke bottles glasses and a seeing eye dog.

  4. Hahah, just wait till ya need bifocals!!!!

But without them, I'd be sitting in one spot, peering dimly into space ...

  5. pooor Jenni! When I turned 40 I suddenly needed glasses for distance, after never wearing them before. Then over the next 14 years my distance vision improved but my reading vision has gone wonky. Now I have drugstore "readers" in every room of the house (but still can't find a pair when I need them!). I tried bifocals but didn't like them.

  6. My hubby wears glasses to correct distance vision and I have the readers. As long as we go everywhere together, we have one good pair of eyes *s*

  7. Hey think of it as a fashion statement. And it is better than getting wrinkles from squinting all the time.

  8. Look at it this way - we all get there eventually if we reach the age of 40. Wearing glasses is much preferable than the alternative - not reaching the age of 40!

  9. Relax. Smile. Think of it this way....not being able to see to sew...or going totally blind....be very glad to live in a time where there is a huge range of very attractive glasses. Without them you might start to get headaches.
I bet you look wonderful in your new glasses.

  10. I've had bifocals for a while now and they still make me mad. It bugs me that there's no better way to correct this fluke in vision. welcome to the club.

  11. Sorry, I didn't think you would hear me snickering all the way over here. I've had glasses since I was nine or ten, and have gotten worse by each subsequent exam. Did you know you can buy reading glasses at the drug store? At least around here. Now that you know your prescription, you might be able to save some $ for fabric.

  12. I've worn glasses since 5th grade. For years and years I only wore contacts, but now have fallen in love with ultralights! Pure heaven to have glasses so lightweight that stay UP where they are supposed to stay. Everytime I start getting bad headaches, I know that I need a new RX. And - I keep 2 pairs because I am absolutely helpless without my glasses and always worry that 1 pair will break. I am sooo happy that I can "fix" my eyesight problems with a pair of glasses. Cheer up! It really isn't so bad - and once you get used to seeing again, you will probably wonder why you waited so long!

    Cheers!

  13. Oh dear .. it happens. I also remember that wearing the jeweled cord around your neck was a joke -- now, I cannot even use the jeweled cord -- those glasses stay on my face from morning to bedtime. If there's a fire in the night, I have to grab my glasses, my orthopedic shoes, and a quilt. BUT, I can see to do my quilting -- and I wouldn't trade those two choices for anything! 8-)
