Friday the 13th

And not a black cat to be seen.

You've all seen far too many hexagons, and that is mainly what I have been working on. The other thing I've been doing is reading my EQ5 book. I've had the program for a while, but I never seem to use it. Why, I wonder?

Maybe 'cos I do a lot of my quilt planning while lying in bed? Plus I'm a bit into making things up, and I haven't got to that bit in the book yet. But I thought I would see if it could help me figure out the number of blocks I will need for the 4patch quilt, and how much fabric I might need for the plain alternate squares.

Well I had a play with it, and finally worked out that I need 224 x plain squares (I don't know if that includes the half triangles around the edge. Probably). So that means I am over half way there with my 4 patches. I have done 140+. As for yardage, I made the outer border the same as the plain squares, so that gives me nearly 6.5 yds of that fabric. But apparently that is enough to do the borders without joining them anywhere. Maybe I should recolour the border so that I can work out the yardage required for the plain squares, then work out the borders separately. Hmmm.

I really must get into the program and use it more. The instruction book doesn't seem very logical to me, so I will have to go through it from beginning to end. I'm not really into that - too boring. I prefer to look up the bits I want to know, get started, then learn the rest as I need to know it. What does that say about my learning style?

Got night duty over the weekend so will be laying low. My bloglines is telling me I have 109 items to read - it can't be so!

  1. Sounds like you've been motoring on your quilt, and you've got it all planned! I haven't ever tried EQ5, and I've been battling with myself about whether or not I should buy it. When you have a play, let me know if you like it.

  2. I don't enjoy reading the directions either. My camera came with 2 fairly thick manuals. I read through the first one just long enough to know how to get a picture in it and out of it. I wonder what else that camera can do?

  3. I haven't used EQ before, but maybe it's something I should ask for a Christmas present from DH. It sure looks like it has a lot of possibilities.

  4. I had to have EQ5 to print Quilted Diamonds....

I MUST learn to use it to design my "Basket of Apples" quilt, based on a Judy Laquidara design.........

Love the four patch quilt......Can't wait to see it.

  5. I have the EQ - Dear Jane CD and it took me months to discover - and only by someone showing me - that I could print two different patterns on the same page. Maybe I should have read the manual?

I just finished my night duty - now I am off until Weds. morning.

  6. Thanks for visiting my blog! I laughed when I read your blog, I do the same thing with EQ5, I hate sitting there are reading through the whole book and doing each exercise, but I MUST or I'm never going to figure out all the things that can be done with it.
I LOVE your hexagons, that's going to be a gorgeous quilt!

  7. I am behind in reading my posts too. Eventually I will get to them all. I don't have quilting software, but I'm with you - I want to learn what I want to know, and don't want to figure out everything in one sitting. But I guess sometimes you have to figure out how the software makers think, so you can kinda think like them when trying to figure out how to do stuff.

  8. I have EQ too and use it pretty much just for calculating needed yardage/blocks too!!! I just can't seem to get the hang of it to do much more, but it is useful enough for me for those 2 features alone! If I see a pattern I like - I buy it - save myself the time of trying to figure it out for myself.

    Cheers!
