Busy with the Beagle

Poor Simon has had an operation, which has kept us busy. We went to the Vet on Monday for his vaccinations and to get his 'old dog' lumps and bumps looked at, and we were back Tuesday morning (with an empty stomach!) for surgery. I spent the day on the Mainland and didn't get home til late, and then with a drugged and dazed boy who needed supervision.

His beagle instincts were not affected, as he tried to follow a lady off the boat at the wrong island as she had a BBQ chicken in her bag. Typical. In the 10 years I have owned him he has never once been off his food.

So we are trying to stay downstairs as much as possible, because otherwise he is up and down, then jumping up and down off the beds. Sadly the sewing machine and computer are upstairs, so I feel mean spending more than half an hour up here.

On Tuesday I managed to con Mum into having a go at sewing up the jumper - I'm so bad. But she is doing some thing with a crochet hook, so I let her go for it. SOON it will be finished, and soon it will be summer.

As for sewing, I have nearly finished the pink flowery number, and frankly it has turned out better than expected. I just have 2 borders to put on, which I may get finished today, but I have promised it to Heartstrings, so off it goes. Then I think I'll reward myself by starting the 1930s Zig Zag quilt. I have my big string quilt in the washing machine at the moment, and I am hoping it won't run. I've had half a yard of plain red homespun in the laundry tub for 24hrs now trying to get it to stop running. I have put salt in, but still it runs. What to do? I don't think it will ever stop.

  1. Poor little thing! He looks so sad, of course it is a beagle look. The fact that he tried to follow the BBQ chicken is a good sign! Hope you get more sewing/computer time tomorrow.

  2. Give Simon a big kiss from me and hugs to you! I know how hard it is when our four legged kids are sick.

  3. Hope the puppy is feeling a lot better. Ours never goes off food either so I know what you mean. I just had a bit of small disaster with a quilt running after it's first wash. I used a cotton scrap from clothing making from years ago that was just the perfect black and fluro splash colour and YES it ran and greyed the adjacent yellow. Lucky it was for myself, not a gift but disappointing and a lesson to only use good fabrics. I had even put a sheet of Colour Catcher (in Australia from supermarkets laundry isle) It went a dark grey and perhaps the colour runs would have been worse without it. I'll use two sheets next time I wash a quilt for the first time.

  4. I used to buy a little packet of stuff from the chemist called "Dye Setter" and it was supposed to be used with the packets of Rit or Dylon. But I would soak fabric that wouldn't stop running in it and it did the trick. Don't know if you can get it anymore, but it might be worth checking next time you're in the chemist.
Poor dear with his 'been-in-the-wars' look, hope he's better soon.

  5. Oh, what a sweet dog. Hope he's better soon. I had a beagle for 12 years and she had an amazing nose (and appetite!), too.

I've never used it, but have in my quilting notes that a company named Pro-Chem makes Re-tayne, a product that keeps the dye from bleeding. In the US they have an 800 number - 800-2BUY-DYE -- but maybe you can find them online and order some. Good luck!

  11. We had a part beagle, & she was just a walking stomach! Hope Simon is soon recovered.
I use white vinegar for running dye but I wash every thing before I use it.

  13. Poor puppy, he looks very sad. Hope he recovers quickly!

I don't know if this will help you, but they print a traditional cotton here that must be treated before using it runs like mad and this is the recipe an experienced quilter gave me for that.

    1. Wash
2 Soak over night in bucket of:
    20 L hot water
    1 c salt
    2 c vinegar
    3. Re- wash

  14. Oh dear, Simon looks like he's lost his best friend.... Hope he's doing better today. As for your red bleeding, try Synthropol, great product. It lifts and holds the excess dye while in the washing machine. I always use 2 cap fulls in the machine once a quilt is finished and washed for the first time.
