Finished Flimsy
I'm very happy as I have just finished the Flimsy of Daniel's Quilt. It is pinned up sideways in the photo - it is about 50" x 74". I'm very pleased as I haven't been able to get motivated to do any real sewing for ages - just the hexagons.
I'm planning to put the remainder of the lime green homespun on the back. I just hope he likes it, and doesn't think it is too young for him. He is 7. If he isn't too keen on it I have another plan for it, so we will see.
I was talking to one of the other nurses on the boat going to work the other night, who is also the Girl Guide Leader on Russell Island. Do you have Guides in the US? I think you have something similar but with a different name. Anyway we were talking about it as I was a Guide back in the Dark Ages. It seems they are always short of money and have to do fund-raising to keep afloat, so I thought I'd make a quilt they could raffle. If Daniel isn't too keen I'll give her this one, or else I was thinking of a String Quilt like the String-X on Quiltville, as I have a lot of pink fabric that I can't see me using in the near future. I don't think this Bricks and Stepping Stones would work, as they are mainly light toned fabrics, not mediums. I do have 2 x 1/2 yard pieces of cute pale pink fabric; one with bikinis, and the other with fashion-type motifs on it which I could use for the triangles. I'll think about it. Apparently the girls in the group are mainly 9 or 10 yo, so I suppose it would be better to do something a bit girly.
Otherwise not much happening. "Don't mention the cricket" is the motto around here. It is amazing how many South Africa fans have popped up this week - one that doesn't even live there, and one that is really an Aussie. Gail and Ruth you know who you are!

I think any boy would be glad to get that quilt.
ReplyDeleteI think our equivalent of Girl Guides is a Girl Scout?
ReplyDeleteI think boy scouts and girl guides were invented in the US werent they??? We have guiding in Canada although it is not as popular as it once was.
ReplyDeletePat
Jenni congrats on finishing the top for Daniel's quilt! I am sure he'll love it.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a Girl Guide too!
I think it's funny that Pat thinks they were invented in the US. Only the British could come up with silly things like dib dib dib and dob dob dob (my brothers were cub scouts!!)
As a former Girl Scout of 7 years' experience, I can speak with some authority! (Until some wiseguy corrects me, you understand.) The Boy Scouts were started by a Brit, Lord Baden-Powell. They are called Cub and Boy Scouts in America too. Baden-Powell's wife and sister helped organize the Girl Guides in the UK. In the US, Juliette Gordon Lowe of Savannah, Georgia, founded the Girl Scouts (the Cub equivalent being Brownies).
ReplyDeletePS Love Daniel's quilt, and any self-respecting Girl Guide would too!
ReplyDeleteHi Jenni,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you and your 100s and 1000s. I promise not to mention you know what.....but think how pleasant it is for little ol' NZ to be feeling that we can indeed still perform at that game!
I love hexagons......have a peep back in my blog and see how mine turned out. I've just started another with a girlie theme.
I was surprised to see Oz has a Bay of Islands....so does NZ....I guess lots of countries do.
Regards from Ali, in BOP New Zealand.
I think it Daniel's will be very chuffed with his quilt. Jane-Ann is correct. Weren't Brownies and Guides, Cubs and Scouts started on Brownsea island in Poole Harbour on the South Coats (near Bournemouth), I used to be a Brownie and loathed it!
ReplyDeleteNever said I was a fan of the South African cricket team. It's wonderful to be an Aussie here when we are winning at cricket, rugby, swimming etc, which is most of the time, but boy do they rub it in when we lose!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt looks lovely and I don't think it's too young.
I bet he will love the quilt. We do have Girl Scouts here, but once upon a time there was also Camp Fire Girls. Back when the crust of the earth was still warm, I was a proud member, selling my candy mints like a seasoned pro every year to raise money *s* Over the years the organization faded a little, but I believe it is still around only now under the name Camp Fire ( they dropped girls because they went all inclusive sometime in the 80's or 90's)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to give them a quilt to raffle off. I was first a Brownie and then a Girl Scout many, many moons ago. I remember I supposedly learned the history of how they were formed, but I can't remember anything now. I know Lord Baden Powell started the Boy Scouts but not who started the Girl Scouts.
ReplyDeleteVery cool quilt. Lots of possibilities with that design...wlxwd
