Pre-wash System Anyone?
Well my cold is pretty well gone, and I've been back at work this weekend on night duty, so there hasn't been any sewing for the last few days. I love my sleep too much.
What has been on my mind since opening up my stash again, is - what has been pre-washed and what hasn't? I have tried various methods in the past to keep track of what has been washed, but they never seem to last.
I suppose I could just wash everything that I buy as soon as I buy it, but I'm just not that organised. I really do prefer to see my fabric fresh and crisp and new when it is just sitting there, waiting to 'be chosen'.
Has anyone got any advice or a great system to share? When I get inspired, the last thing I want to do is go downstairs, wash all these little bits of fabric, wait while they dry on the line, iron them and then start. What if it's night-time, as it so often is?
Thanks to everyone who has visited my new blog - I really appreciate the comments and interest. I feel really motivated since I've started blogging, and sewing is much higher on my priority list now. I've started a book with my UFOs and thoughts for what I would like to do next, and any ideas that have just been floating around up there.
Don't you just love your computer?

I'm like Sandra. I have some washed and some not. I rarely wash unless it's a really vibrant color that I'm afraid will run later. And batiks. I always wash those. I wash my quilts in cold water anyway and have never had a problem with bleeding before.
ReplyDeleteI snip a corner on my washed fabrics, it helps tremendously to prevent the thread tangled mess that happens in the washing.
ReplyDeleteMy stash is about 50-50 too, except my recycled wools. They don't even get into the house (the washer/dryer are in the garage) without a good washing and felting.
I so far just can remember what I've washed and worked with. I dont know what I'll do otherwise except some may get re-washed LOL. xoxo melzie
ReplyDeleteI prewashed when I first started quilting; afterall you were suppose to. :-) Now, I rarely prewash anything. Probably not a good idea because of the chemicals in the fabrics but I'm just anxious to start sewing. LOL
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed visiting your blog and will visit again!
I have a basket in my sewing room. New fabric goes right into the basket. I wash it as soon as there is enough of each color to make a load. I want it ready to use as soon as possible. I've had several disasters with bleeding so I wash everything.
ReplyDeleteYou might be able to tell what is washed and what isn't by feeling it. I know my fabric feels much "crisper" if it's not been washed - though this isn't always a fair test.
Half my stash is washed and half isn't. If i have purchased the fabric and don't need it straight away i will wash it. But if i am eager to start using it i just cut right into it.
ReplyDeleteBut if there is any color that i think might run i definetly do wash it.
I prewash everything. The chemicals in the fabric make my allergies nuts otherwise. I put all new fabric into a bag so I don't get to play with it until it's washed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog
I don't pre-wash. There is the rare exception when it comes to some reds, but it is rare. When I first started quilting it seemed that the quilt police might arrest me if I didn't wash. Then I observed some of the quilt deputies in class buying fabric during class and using it right away. I controlled myself from calling out "hypocrit" but made the decision that I would happily skip that step from then on *s* So far no disasters.
