Tough Love

Well, how's this for a sad face? Yes, Chloe is using her new quilt, but she is not very happy with me as she has been prescribed some Tough Love by the Dog Training Lady. The DTLady has many years experience with beagles at the Quarantine Service, and she says the only way to Chloe's brain is via her stomach.

So Chloe is now only being fed as treats - the bowl has been put away. Treats are given only as rewards for allowing the training harness to be put on, and when it is on, for walking properly. Poor Chloe... She is very stubborn, and must be getting a bit peckish by now, but still she resists some of the time. Sometimes she just turns her head when I try to put the lead on, other times she will allow it if I have food in my hand. When we get it on she is walking quite well on it in the house and yard, so she is getting some food, but I suspect from the looks I am getting that the tummy is rumbling a bit. The big question is can I be strong enough to wait her out??

In quilting news, I have laid out the blocks I have for the 4patch, and now I feel I either didn't make enough, or I can't find some. This is the problem when you make something over a 12 month period - each time you get back to it you can't remember what you're doing or where you've put everything. My latest calculations indicate that I need 255 4 patch blocks. A blog entry some time back indicates that I was going to make 248. Pretty close really. However when I counted up what I had I could only count 211. So I re-searched, and found another 11 which takes me to 222. Where the rest are, or whether I actually made them, I don't know.

So I think I'll just make some more and if the others turn up one day I can make a doll quilt out of them. I have some strips left over and will make a few from newer fabrics, then get to it. Why do I always make it so hard for myself

In other news, Mum had my old Sunbeam mixmaster fixed this week. It was actually my Grandmother's (Mum's Mum), and my Mum can remember it when she was a teenager, so that makes it circa 1950-ish. I have one original bowl, and a replacement bowl, and the beaters which are a bit mangled looking, but they work.

Mum's Mixmaster is younger obviously but still pretty ancient, and this week we have been looking on ebay for some new beaters for hers, and maybe a back up pair for mine, but I tell you, there are many many shapes and models.

I have bought one pair, which I suspect will fit Mum's machine, as her's has a bigger gap between the beaters, so it can accommodate bigger beaters. So when they arrive we will see. I feel like I should make a cake just because I can. For the last couple of years I have had to search for recipes that don't start with "cream the butter and the sugar", and I'll give you the tip - most recipes start that way!

I have been perusing the recipe books but can't make up my mind. Anyway better dash as it is our Federal Election Day here in Australia, and it is compulsory to vote here. I'd better go and do it now so I don't forget.

PS Something's happened to my header - the last word has dropped off the photo. Why do these things happen? I've been in to try and fix it, but can't.

  1. Jenni, I have a mixer just like that one! I was wondering if that was the original color, it looked like it might have been painted over. It runs pretty well, but my DH had to replace the cord for me a while back. I love old kitchen things, much more fun that the new ones!

  2. I hope for both your sakes that Chloe decides to cooperate soon.

I'm currently haunting the Australian news websites waiting for election results. First federal election that I haven't been able to watch the live coverage - yes I am a political tragic.

  3. Poor Chloe, you are very strong and she will be the better for it, but I am a softie!
I have a sunbeam that was my mum's too, mine is more lemon and dates from the 60s. Mum gave it to me a few Christmases ago, I don't have the original bowls she bought me new stainless steel ones. I never thought of Ebay, I would like the mincer attachment.

  5. Love those Mixmaster machines. I have my mom's out in the garage . . . never occurred to me to have it serviced to working condition. Oh just think how happy it would by *s* Good luck Chloe - hopefully it will all click for her soon.

  8. That is such a sad face!! She is saying to us all "Don't you just feel so sorry for poor little me - because I have such a mean Mum" LOL

I hear Beagles can be pretty stubborn - so I wish you all the best :))

I hear you have a new Prime Minister now.

  9. I saw a mixer like that at a garage sale! I suspect it was a younger one than yours though.
Poor Chloe, she does look sad. But Beagles do love their food, so she should get there- hunger will get the better of her. I like her quilt.

  11. longmirePoor Chloe's laying it on a bit thick, isn't she? What a woebegone little face, but I don't think she'll actually starve.
Mum had a Sunbeam mixmaster from the 50's and the beaters looked exactly the same. I only threw them out last year, thinking no-one would want them; I would have gladly posted them to you to seee if they'd fit. I loved that machine,we learned to bake using it and it was so useful. But now I have a Kenwood and that's even better, I must say.

  13. I always try to teach coming from a positive place, not a negative one and the idea of starving the dog into submission makes me cringe. I know you are just trying to do what you think is best.

Please make sure she has acccess to fresh water, dogs become dehydrated quickly. Good luck and I hope this does not last long.

Love the mixer! Brings back lots of fond memories. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Whenever I read "cream the butter and sugar" I remember all the years I did it by hand. Left the cubes of margarine (real butter only for Christmas cookies) in a bowl on the counter for 2-3 hours, then added the sugar, then mashed them together by hand with a wooden spoon until they were sufficiently creamed. Then added the eggs one and a time and mashed and creamed some more. It wasn't until I'd been married for 5 years and got my first food processor that I had a way to do it other than by hand. My little portable mixer just wasn't powerful enough.

  15. I suspect my mixer is that same model. Love it, still using it - Grandma (Dad's mother) used it until she died, and then I inherited it. Has two white/yellow bowls - they're weird, like white glass with yellow paint on the outside. I just noticed yesterday that one of the beaters is looking a little the worse for wear ... I have thought about getting it serviced, but I don't want some hamfisted oaf bollixing the poor old thing so have put it off. I worry less about it needing a service since I saw the dude on the Collectors talking about the peculiar ozone smell, like oh alright then, it's not about to blow up after all, just goes with the territory ... if I hadn't given up smoking I probably wouldn't be able to smell it *G*
