Progress
I know this is supposed to be a quilting blog (being in the Q4P ring), but I hope you will allow me this little knitting interlude. I think I've figured out the needles now - see my little tube there on the left. I'm still getting the 'needle change ladder' effect, but only in the ribbing, not in the stocking stitch. Don't know why.
I've decided to start a sample piece as per the sock pattern to try to master the techniques, but not putting the length required for a normal sock into it. Make sense? I have just looked at the heel instructions, and it makes no sense at all, so I will look at some tutorials before going on.
Doubt there will be much quilting done today, as there is plenty to be done in the yard and the house. Maybe tomorrow I'll get onto that Girl Guide quilt. I have to put the borders on and quilt it. I hope the Irish among you didn't overdo it yesterday, and are suffering now...

You are quite brave . . . I'm afraid with those pointy needles, I'd put my eye out *s*
ReplyDeleteAs a desperately-wanting-to-learn-to-knit gal, I enjoy reading posts about knitting on the quilting blogs. I have had a lesson from a friend and I can manage the knit stitch but I can't quite master casting on and I have to do it over & over to get it right. So, I am waiting for another lesson just to get that part down. :D

ReplyDeleteThat's the pattern and tutorial I have used over and over! I had never done anything but knitting on single point needles with acryllic yarn before trying.
I might suggest that you get the shortened version of those dpns, it will be MUCH easier. And don't kill me, but go to a real yarn shop for your first pair of socks and get their recommendations for all wool yarn. It frankly is the easiest to knit with! I use Blue Moon almost exclusively now, and use the thicker weight of the 2 they have to offer. Don't let the notion of wool making your feet too hot, I love them in CA and AZ!
I use 2.75 or #2 dpns. I'll answer any questions you've got if you'd like!

Hi, knitting is fun, so of course you are forgiven (at least by me) for posting about it. I'm really not sure if i know how to expalin this in english, but I'll try: when you change needle, do you carry the last "loop" (i have no idea what it's called in eng.) of the needle you just finished with you to the next? Meaning that when you have made x amount of rounds, you will have moved the loops via all your needles. I don't know if this made any sence... but it's a way of not getting the 'needle change ladder' effect.
ReplyDeleteAnne is right--if you move the stitches over from needle to needle from time to time you will get rid of that laddering effect.
ReplyDeleteIf the tutorials don't help, try to locate a copy of Elizabeth Zimmerman's book, Knitting Without Tears. It has a great explanation of that dreaded heel thing.
Now learning that there's a book called 'Knitting without Tears' makes me realise that a) knitting is much harder than it looks and b) you are very brave trying such a demanding project up front!
ReplyDeleteGood on you Jenni!
I was going to recommend Come to Silver's sock class, but I see someone beat me to it, it got me through my first pair of socks and now I can't stop. If you pull the second stitch on the needle a little tighter than the others it should eliminate the ladder effect.
ReplyDeleteknitted socks!!! How about some of those legendary bedsocks for your cute niece and nephew like Nana used to make...I still have mine!

Jenni, of course you are allowed. What fun you are having. I might have to round up some of the supplies you've mentioned along with hints from other comments and pass them along to my DD#1. Just this past year she developed an interest in knitting. I admire you all. That is one craft that has stumped me.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will share the finished Girl Guide quilt.

Hi Jenni !
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to come over to your blog and say "Hi" -- and thanks for visiting my on my blog. (and thanks for trying to help me with arranging photos on my blog -- I'm still having problems with that -- but hopefully I'll get it soon!)
