Fabric Costs
It's interesting to hear that Australia isn't the only country that must have lots of taxes on fabric. I buy from a few online stores. I have bought from Fabric Shack many times, also Quilter's Quarter. Hancocks too, but sometimes things don't arrive, or you get 2 of something and not something else, and it seems to take a lot longer to arrive. There are others, and I certainly look at a lot of different sites, but I find that Fabric Shack and Quilter's Quarter are my favourites.
To get value for money with postage you need to order a few yards (terrible shame), so you need a store that has a wide range of the stuff you like. I love the Repros, and many of them go on sale in the US, which never happens here. There is 1 store in my city that stocks Repros, so sometimes I go there and look at the fabric, but usually I've already seen it online or in a magazine. Occasionally I will go and look at a particular fabric to see the colour, but generally I find I am pretty good at choosing what I like online now. The hard part is saving up and not buying little bits here and there, so that you can get a heap all at once (for the postage you understand LOL!). I also occasionally buy a magazine, as they can be up to A$20 here, when they are about A$8 on the cover.
I buy half yard pieces when I am stash building, which seems to work well for me. I will put a few of the new ones in the nearly completed hexagon quilt, then in the NOT nearly completed 4 patch, then dream about what to do next. I would like to start the Civil War Diary quilt too.

Hi, Jenni! We have the same problem here - fabric is expencive because of taxes and costs of import. So a lot of the time it's cheaper to order from the US and take the cost of shipping. I to love the Fabric Shack - I have also good experiences ordering from Tousands of Bolts and WebFabrics. Take care! By the way How're the socks coming along?
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe how expensive fabric is there! Are other imported items that expensive too?
ReplyDeleteI am aghast at the cost of fabric in your country. It's bad enough here, in the US, with quality fabric over $9.25 yd, although we can find sales for ... $6.00 or so.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed at the prices you are describing. I had no idea. I think most fabrics I have bought are about $8-9 a yard. FQ's are usually $2.50. I ought to take a vacation to one of countries and brings loads & loads of fabric! Even at 'sale' prices (yours) I could pay for my trip. This is JOKE of course! :)
ReplyDeleteI was looking at quilting books in my LQS (thanks!) yesterday and soft-cover black and white imprints are retailing for $44!!! I bet they are around $12 in the US. Must buy some online :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I will definitely check out Fabric Shack.
Cheers!
Its funny how we have to buy loys to make a saving....but it works for me!! tracey
ReplyDeleteI will never, ever complain about paing $9-$10 for a yard of fabric again!! Ouch!
ReplyDeleteIt's the same problem here with the high cost of import taxes, it's much less for me to order online from the USA.
ReplyDeleteHow's your sock coming?
Our state tax is 6 1/2% of the total. The latest tax form says that if you bought anything online and didn't pay tax, you have to pay the state tax. That seems unfair to me, since you still have to pay the postage. But alas I sense this is the wave of the future. So buy now, while you still have a chance!
ReplyDeleteMy order arrived from Fabricshack - in 6 days, including Easter and weekend!!! I was thrilled with their service and fabrics - saved over $220 working on A$20 a metre and some of them were repros that would have cost more than that - I'll definitely order again LOL. They even put in 3 little gifties. I was VERY impressed. Thanks for putting me on to them.
ReplyDeleteI'm not to sure what the exchange rate is for AS$ to Euros, but I pay roughly 14€ a metre for the proper quilting material, anywhere between 1 and 5 Euros for a FQ and forget the Magazines - nearly 10 Euro. The only thing that is dirt cheap is poly batting at 5 Euro a metre
