Need a Name Please

Does anyone know the name of this pattern? I thought it was Hunter's Star, but after googling that I see it isn't. I've seen it before, and the photo is of this pattern in a book I have. They just call it Scrappy Star.

I know I shouldn't even be thinking about another quilt with all the UFOs (still to be aired) hanging over my head, but I want to make a quilt for a friend, and I want to make it scrappy just from stash, and I've always liked this pattern. I thought I'd look for some photos of various quilts for some colour inspiration, but I can't find it on the web.

I thought yellow for the stars blue for the sashing and red for the squares, but I'm not sure. I figure it doesn't hurt to have it in the back of your mind, so you can think of different options. I often regret it if I launch straight into a project without giving it time to fester in my mind. Put it this way, I still have paintings that need to be put on the walls, but after living here nearly 3 years, I'm just 'not quite sure' where to put some of them. Trust me - I don't have many options! Perhaps it's just plain laziness?

  1. The pattern has been referred to as the Variable Star or Morning Star. Get in touch with Heavens to Bettsy. She has it in a book. I did this quilt for my son's 18th - beige stars with everything else a scrappy blue.I graphed the pattern for my needs. I put in some lighter stars to make the Southern Cross appear. I like the quilting in your photo. I didn't think of that way.

  2. If you want to see the quilt mentioned in the above comment you can see it if you go to the post on my blog of July 19 2007 (last year) you can see Dianne's version on the March 6th 2007 post. I actually thought that the first one was done from the first Nickel Quilts book. I'll cehck with both my friends tomorrow. I really think you need to plan a trip to the mainland sometime....

  4. I've heard it called Morning Star or Scrappy Star. I've done it twice, once is on my bed http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/575/2115/1600/DCP_1057.jpg
and another one I made for dd in lavenders, blues and golds with cream stars with the similar colored dragonflies on it as a duvet cover. I love the pattern, but it is quite time consuming.

  5. Hah! I thought it was Vestibule, but then figured I'd better check. "Barbara Brackman, author of Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, shares her knowledge of traditional pieced quilt blocks with Alex Anderson, host of HGTV 's Simply Quilts. According to Brackman, the same pattern often has many names, and there is no single, correct name. Here is a sample of some of the more common.
Morning Star or Vestibule - The plain star blocks of this quilt are complemented by pieced sashings between each block. Anderson and Brackman agree that this is a good quilt block for beginning quilters. " from HGTV web site. Very effective though, isn't it? 8-)

  6. I thought it was called hidden stars as the stars only appear when you add sashing. But it seems I am completely wrong - lol !
