The Couch Quilt Top
Well, Christmas is over - quite a pleasant day it was too. Not too hot which was a blessing, especially in the kitchen. Not that we had much hot food - in fact baked potatoes were the only things cooked on the day. All the family was there, with no dramas.
Here is the finished quilt top for the Couch Quilt, as it has come to be known. This project has been notoriously difficult to photograph. The light is bad during the day as it is overcast with showers, and at night the flash makes it look lighter than it is. The flash picks up the lightest parts of each fabric and accentuates them. Also my camera is far from great. I did put in a few lighter blocks, but made them less obvious by putting red in the centre rather than a dark brown fabric.
The most worrying block is the greyish one with the brown diagonal lines on it, with the pink centre. It is the experimental block I made before I started the quilt, and although it is brownish, it stands out a bit, not just in the photo. I have two other blocks I could replace it with, but I'm not too keen on undoing that area to put another block in.
I have been watching/listening to the cricket today. The Boxing Day Test Match is always popular, and Australia is playing India this year. In India they say that there is only one sport, and that cricket rivals religion in that country. There has also been a lot of talk about Australia's domination of the game worldwide, and what should be done about it. All the other cricketing nations ought to train harder - that's what ought to be done about it! Poor losers. However, I must admit that things looked a bit grim after the first day's play, with India's bowlers making a meal of the Australian side. But, today, Australia returned the favour, and we are now over 100 runs ahead. I know Tracey will be as relieved as I am. She is also a "cricket tragic". Then there is the sailing to look at.
Quite a cornucopia of sport, luckily, to distract me from the fact that everything you could want to buy in the shops is on sale. In fact it was reported on the news tonight that so much is being spent, mainly on the plastic, that inflation is tipped to rise to 4%, which could trigger an interest rate rise in February. Amazing, isn't it? Only 8 weeks or so ago people were crying poor because interest rates had gone up 0.25%, and now we (Australians) are spending billions of dollars in the shops. Hard to come to grips with at times. Anyway, I'm not there. I'd rather spend my limited funds on fabric - I've got my priorities right!

The quilttop looks wonderful. Did you use the Happy Hour Pattern? I love it!
ReplyDeleteLooks like Happy Hour to me, too. Yes indeed, you do have your priorities in line, fabric before most anything else sounds about right to me.
ReplyDeleteYou could change out that gray looking square without too much trouble. Do you have the tinted plastic value finder for determining lights, mediums and darks? Surprising how much easier it is to select fabric with this tool.
Big hug to Simon and Chloe girl. Happy sports listening!
Love the look of the quilt. I don't see the grey block as a problem, but if you are really not happy with it better to change it now, than regret it later :)
ReplyDeleteOf course, fabric buying has to come first :) I love your quilt top. I think it is beautiful and I love the colors!!

I think you're right about the red centres in those neutral blocks - looks great that way. I'm not sure the grey diagonal square stands out as much as you think it does but I agree with Helen - if it's going to bother you, change it now, while it's not too hard to do - otherwise it will just bug you every time you see the quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt! Really a special accomplishment. And I grew up in Canada, although I'm American. So hockey is the sport I love the best--and curling. But cricket is beyond me. They don't show it on TV here at all (Well they don't have curling either, except for the Olympics!) But we do have a hockey team--the Ducks. they won the Stanley Cup.
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas lunch sounds like ours Jenni - lovely, simple and no extra heat in the kitchen! Glad you had a good one!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt top looks lovely. Glad you had a nice Christmas and that it wasn't too hot.
ReplyDeleteYour couch quilt looks fantastic. You do have your priorities right :) I haven't spent a dime since Christmas, haven't stepped outside the house. I'm staying away from all the sale frenzy this year.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Jenni!
ReplyDeleteJoy for 2008.
Your quilt top turned out lovely!!
ReplyDeleteMy eye was not drawn to any one block till I read the post LOL, but I understand how it is if something doesn't hit us right LOL. When I looked at it I just thought, oh gosh how lovely that it is :O)
A Happy Healthy New Year to you!
The top looks just great to me - including that block that is bothering you. I'd call it a job well done and get to finishing it.
ReplyDeleteSo very glad that your dog is OK - how scary!
the quilt top looks amazing. Happy you had a pleasent Christmas

I think the quilt looks great . . . didn't notice the one block until you pointed it out *s*
ReplyDeleteHope you are enjoying the new year!
Your couch quilt looks great. We had lackluster holiday sales here in the US but they say that every year, it seems. They want sales to go up every year.
ReplyDeleteOooh -- love the new couch quilt! What fun. Happy New Year to you!
ReplyDeleteJust love the couch quilt!
ReplyDeleteBelated Christmas and New Year greetings. Can't imagine hot Christmas - nice to get back to Finland where there are just a couple of inches of snow on the ground after being in Maine - records being set all over the place there (well over a meter in December)! Still sore from the shoveling! And people there still ask me how I survive in cold, snowy Finland!!
I gather the Boxing Day sales in the UK were manic, with £1,000 being spent every minute! I cannot see how anyone in their right mind would want to spend the day after Christmas on the battlefield called Oxford Street!
ReplyDeleteI can't see anytihng wrong with the grey block, but like everyone else, if ti is going to bug you deal with it now, rather than later.
Happy new year!
This is Gorgeous! Love the colors!

Stinking hot here (42C), I hope it's better in Queensland. The couch quilt is great, and I wouldn't change a thing.Nothing seemed out of place to me, I bet if you live with it for a while you won't even notice it any more.

ReplyDeleteI had to look and look to find the block you were talking about. I love the pattern, I have it here for when I catch up on the UFO's. But if it bothers you, change it. I think once it's quilted and in use you will never notice it again. Please send some of your warm weather here, and I will send some snow and ice. Lori in South Dakota
ReplyDeleteI like this quilt. The colors speak to me.
